A spot of Culture ....
Russia's most characteristic architectural feature is its onion-domed churches.
Folk culture is remembered in the heroic stamping dances of the Georgian State Dance Company, regional embroidery and woodcarving, Russian dolls and the carved wooden houses of the east.
The 19th century was also probably the richest period for Russian writers, beginning with poet and author Pushkin, and including Gogol, Turgenyev, Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, and Chekhov.
Music and Dance Russia was the main home of classical ballet as it developed during the 19th century and in the 20th century the ?Ballets Russes' revitalised ballet all over the world. In the modern era, the Bolshoi and the Kirov Ballets continue the classical tradition. Famous names include Ulanova and Nureyev.
Concertos, symphonies and orchestral works have come from well-known composers such as Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky and Shostakovich.
Food and Drink Caviar, bliny (pancakes), boeuf Stroganoff, shashlyk (mutton kebabs), borsch (seasoned soup), shchi (cabbage soup) and pickled herring are traditional Russian dishes.
Russian kvasses (fermented from rye flour and malt) are distinguished by their excellent and unusual taste and aroma. Russia also produces many good wines and vodka is associated with the country.
Some Attractions Moscow Away from the grey Stalinist thoroughfares an older Moscow survives, with golden onion domes peeping through the narrow, winding inner-city streets. The most famous attractions include the Kremlin and Red Square.
St. Petersburg Russia's most European city has been dubbed the Venice of the North for its palace-lined waterways. Peter the Great's beautiful creation managed to escape the architectural incursions of Stalinism and its grandiose relics of tsarist days are virtually intact.
Trans-Siberian Railway The Trans-Siberian Railway is the way to see this massive country. The six-day journey takes you from Moscow to Vladivostok, passing through endless forests of birch and pine, log-cabin settlements and vast steppes. The route takes you past Siberia's Lake Baikal, a waterway as big as Belgium, and multicultural Irkutsk, the most appealing city along the line.
