A spot of Culture Music & Dance: France has a long and distinguished musical tradition. From the 11th to the 13th century, chansons de geste (songs of deeds), epic poems sung by minstrels, were produced in northern France. Troubadours, aristocratic poet-musicians who wrote eloquent songs dealing with courtly love, war, and nature, were also active in southern France.
Literature and Art: France has a rich history of producing renowned writers, playwrights and poets. The most notable range from Rabelais, Montaigne and Rousseau, to the key figure of 19th-century French Romanticism, Victor Hugo, as well as Gustave Flaubert, Charles Baudelaire, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir and Albert Camus.
Baroque painter Nicolas Poussin, sculptor Auguste Rodin, Impressionists Claude Monet and Edouard Manet, and Fauvist, Henri Matisse, are among some of great artists who emerged from France.
Food & Drink Food or gastronomy is something the French take extremely seriously and are forever thinking about. As well as the traditional French delights of escargot, foie gras, bouillabaisse (fish soup) and succulent seafood, however, France's North African and Asian populations have influenced French cuisine, adding spice and colour. France is also home to some of the best wine in the world.
Some of France's Attractions Paris: France's capital city is brimming over with famous sights and inspiring experiences. The monumental architecture, dating from all periods of its long history, reflects the city's political and cultural status, while the Eiffel Tower was built for the Paris World's Fair of 1889, is now the city's most famous landmark.
Chamonix - The town lies in one of the spectacular valleys of the French Alps. The area is dominated by the peak of Mont Blanc. In late spring and summer, the glaciers and high-altitude snow and ice serve as a backdrop for meadows and hillsides carpeted with wildflowers, shrubbery and trees.
Cannes: This resort, on the world-famous Côte d'Azur, is a haven for the rich and famous. During the International Film Festival in May, Cannes drips with money and glamour. Apart from elegant boutiques, hotels and restaurants, it also has beaches with the equivalent of room service.
