Croatian Language and Culture
Where does it come from? The Croat language is a member of a wider family of Slavic languages. It is written in the Roman alphabet. It is a member of the Eastern European family of languages. Serbian is written in a modified form of the Cyrillic alphabet and has significant syntactical and morphological differences to Croatian.
How many people speak it? The population of Croatia is 4,666,000. Croatians make up around 80 percent of the population.
In how many countries? Croatian is spoken mainly in Croatia, and in some small enclaves of Serbia and Austria.

A spot of Culture Art and Literature: Sculptor Ivan Mestrovic is a celebrated figure within Croatia's art world. His work can be seen in town squares throughout the country, and he has also designed several imposing buildings, including the Croatian History Museum in Zagreb.
Music & Dance: Croatian folk music is a real mixture of styles. The kolo is a lively Slavic round dance accompanied by violinists or players of the 'tambura', a Croatian mandolin. The guitar and accordion bands that originate from Dalmatia are distinctly Italian in flavour.
Food & Drink Croatian cuisine is heterogeneous, and is therefore known as "the cuisine of regions". Mainland cuisine is characterised by the earlier Proto-Slavic and the more recent contact with Hungarian, Viennese and Turkish cuisine. The coastal region bears the influences of the Greek, Roman and Illyrian, as well as of the later Mediterranean cuisine - Italian and French.
Croatian cuisine comprises many greasy delicacies, including burek, a layered pie made with meat or cheese, and piroska, a cheese doughnut from the Zagreb region.
The Adriatic coast excels in seafood. Regional dishes include scampi, prstaci (shellfish), and Dalmatian brodet (mixed fish stewed with rice). Inland, specialities include manistra od bobica - beans and fresh maize soup, or struckle - cottage cheese rolls.
