German Language and Culture
Where does it come from? The German language is a member of the West Germanic group of the Germanic subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages.
There are two types of German, High and Low. High German is the standard written language, used almost exclusively in books and newspapers, even in the regions where Low German is more commonly spoken.
How many people speak it? Altogether nearly 100 million people speak German as their first language, around 77 million of whom live in Germany.
In how many countries? It's the official language of Germany and Austria and is one of the official languages of Switzerland. German is spoken throughout Europe, including Belgium, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Baltic republics, Belarus, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine, and the Balkan states.

A spot of Culture As a nation that has always been central to history, Germany has a rich cultural and artistic heritage that has tended to reflect the pre-occupations of its people. Germany has produced an array of outstanding artists, composers, writers and philosophers whose work has contributed greatly to the development of culture in the western world.
Music & Dance: Germany is noted for its numerous great 18th and 19th Century composers. Ludwig Van Beethoven is thought to be one of the greatest classical composers in Western music, while Bach and Richard Wagner are also celebrated for their musical genius.
Food & Drink The German diet is largely made up of meat and potatoes, sausage and dumplings, and bratwurst are staples.
Some of Germany's Attractions Berlin: The capital city and heart of Germany, Berlin has played a central role in the events of the 20th Century. It is a collage of grand public buildings, fine museums and theatres rich in cultural distraction, and urbane bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Today, the city is undergoing the challenging task of reunification.
Munich: This is a city that skilfully mixes German tradition and modern cosmopolitanism. Beer and bratwurst do feature heavily in Munich culture, but there is also a wealth of elegant museums, theatres and gardens to enjoy in what is a compact, friendly city.
Frankfurt on the Main: This is the financial and geographical centre of western Germany. A significant amount of the nation's wealth is generated here. Over 10% of the city's taxes are devoted to culture, so it's no surprise that Frankfurt on the Main is home to the richest collection of museums in the Germany.
Swiss German Language and Culture
Where does it come from? Switzerland, a country with a small population which has four languages used amongst it's inhabitants. Swiss German (Schwyzertütsch in Swiss) is the most popular and widely spoken. French is spoken by approximately 1.5 million, about 500,000 speak Italian and roughly 50,000 Romansch.
How many people speak it? Approximately 5 million speak Swiss German.
Why Swiss German? The Italian and French spoken in Switzerland are very close to the languages spoken in France and Italy, with the main differences being that of accent. Swiss German, on the other hand, is a Germanic dialect and it is almost never written (as people use standard German for the written language). Since it is a distinctly local dialect, used in every day speech, is it fastly evolving. Being justly proud of their language, the Swiss Germans are often reluctant to speak standard German, they often prefer to speak English!
One difficulty with learning Swiss German is that there is no standard orthography, this language widely varies from one area to another, so you will notice many differences in dialects.
Food and drink 'Rosti' is German Switzerland's national dish (crispy, fried, shredded potatoes), however most Swiss dishes consist of the best of German and French cuisine. Cheese plays a large part in the Swiss diet, fresh fish from the beautiful lakes and perhaps the most famous, Swiss chocolate is used in a great variety of ways.
